Level-up your acting career in 5 simple steps

By: Erica Arvold

Most screen artists struggle to maintain consistent advancement in their career.

Here are 5 things to remember, so you can succeed:

  1. Any career (and even life) is not a diagonal upswing on a graph. It’s more like sailing…there is a destination and you will tack back and forth to get there as the winds blow.

  2. Trying harder isn’t always the answer. Sometimes a break, self-compassion, or adjusting your goals can make a profound difference.

  3. Perseverance is a golden skill. It involves a positive approach that includes accepting failure, wading through muck, and watching those around you succeed (sometimes with less training and more luck than you), and continuing forward anyway. You are human and all the feelings are important to feel. Moving forward might mean getting out of bed on a really challenging day...and someday, that teeny step forward may lead to accepting an award.

  4. Training and practice can’t always be seen or lead to immediate results. Only you know if you are in good artistic shape and cultivating healthy creative habits. Just like in sports, artists must work out daily…we are athletes of the soul, after all.

  5. Finding an artistic community is imperative to your long-term sustainability. Filmmaking is a community-driven craft. Too many of us isolate between gigs. Your life outside of the gig will be much richer when you have an artistic home full of fellow creatives that share in the highs, lows, challenges, and celebrations.
